Citation & Format Guide

Social Media

Comments from social media can be cited in the body of your text. For example:

In a recent tweet, Cornel West reminds us not to treat Martin Luther King as "an isolated icon on a pedestal to be viewed as some figure in a museum. Let us learn from him and from them all" (@CornelWest, January 15, 2018).

If a formal footnote citation is needed, use the following format:

Cornel West (@CornelWest), "King was a product of a black prophetic tradition," Twitter, January 15, 2018, 11:29 a.m ., https://twitter.com/CornelWest/status/952986142202216448

Shortened footnote

West, "King product of black prophetic tradition".

Bibliography

Generally social media posts are not included in a bibliography. A frequently cited account or extensive social media thread on a single subject can be included in the bibliography.
