While the biggest theological debates arguably took place in the first few centuries of Christianity, major theological debates and developments continued to occur in the Latin West in the medieval period. Even though mysticism and monasticism have roots in early Christianity, both flourished in Western Europe at this time. This period is also notable in the history of Christian thought in that, much more so than early Christianity, a number of theological works known to have been written by Christian women have survived to today.
